McCormick’s Thomas signs with Converse

Thursday afternoon, McCormick star Dre’Kevan Thomas announced his commitment to Converse University for track and field, as well as signing his national letter of intent. The senior had offers from USC Upstate, North Greenville, Erskine and more. He’s the first signee of the 2024 class for Converse.

“It feels great to continue to do what I love around the people that I love,” said Thomas.

Thomas is coming off a spectacular season on the track, where he placed second in the 200-meter dash in the 1A state meet, as well as walking away with the 110-meter hurdle championship. According to Thomas, the plan for continuing his impressive career is simple.

“I’ve just got to continue working hard and do what needs to be done,” said Thomas. “I just have to stay committed to the process.”

It’s not just on the track where Thomas excels, however. He’s also an impressive basketball and football player, earning all-region selections in both sports. This season, Thomas had over 1,000 all-purpose yards for the Chiefs in football, which led the team. Thomas has yet to see the basketball court so far this season due to a torn labrum, but should return soon.

Thomas was born and raised in McCormick and played his entire high school career with the Chiefs. With much dedication and practice, he was able to make a name for himself in the small town. According to Thomas, leaving McCormick is bittersweet.

“I love the town and the people, but sometimes you have to leave the nest,” said Thomas. “McCormick will forever be my home.”
